The SmartKey system, introduced in 2008 and now standard on most Kwikset products sold at Fort Worth-area Home Depot and Lowe’s locations, uses a sidebar mechanism instead of traditional pins. Rekeying a SmartKey cylinder requires the current working key plus the SmartKey learn tool. Here’s the compatibility gotcha: first-generation SmartKey cylinders (2008-2012, identifiable by a plain silver slot face with no “SmartKey” branding) cannot be rekeyed if the current key is lost. The second-generation and Gen 3 versions added a fallback procedure, but it still requires partial disassembly. We stock both generations and carry the factory reset cradle for Gen 3 units.

The third architecture is the Kwikset Signature Series and 980/985 deadbolts, which use a six-pin cylinder with the SC1 keyway (Schlage-compatible). These are less common in Fort Worth residential work but appear frequently in 2018-2023 builds in the Walsh and Riverset developments, where builders spec’d them for master-key compatibility with commercial-grade Schlage systems. Signs Your Kwikset Lock Rekeying Is Failing

• The key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract. This usually means the tailpiece (the flat metal strip connecting cylinder to bolt mechanism) has cracked or the cam has rounded off. On Kwikset 660 deadbolts, the zinc-alloy tailpiece is particularly prone to fatigue after 8-12 years of use, especially in Fort Worth’s heat-cycling climate where metal expands and contracts through 40-degree daily swings in summer.
• The key works in one direction only. A cylinder that unlocks but won’t lock, or vice versa, typically has a broken pin stack or a worn cam slot. For first-generation SmartKey cylinders without a working key, the lock must be drilled and replaced. Second-gen and Gen 3 SmartKey units can be recovered with specialized tools we carry. Kwikset markets SmartKey as a homeowner-rekeyable system, and the procedure is straightforward when everything works. Where DIY goes wrong: attempting the learn procedure with a worn or duplicated key (the system reads the cut depths imprecisely and accepts a ghost combination), forcing the tool into a first-generation cylinder that lacks the reset tolerance, or rekeying without verifying the bolt retracts fully after the procedure. For traditional pin-tumbler cylinders, the tools are inexpensive but the skill isn’t.
