Sargent Car Key Cutting: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

Sargent car key cutting in Fort Worth typically runs $45-$85 per key for standard brass-blank duplication and $75-$145 for transponder or high-security cuts, with same-day service at our shop or mobile dispatch to your location. We stock Sargent-compatible key blanks for the 6300, 6400, and 6500 series cylinders, plus the RA and RB restricted keyways that most big-box cutters won’t touch. Most owners figure out something’s wrong when their Sargent key starts catching in the ignition or door cylinder, or when a duplicate cut at a hardware kiosk won’t turn at all - the blank was right, but the bitting was off by enough to leave you stranded outside a Fort Worth parking garage.

Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent keying breaks down into three families, and getting the blank wrong means the key slides in but won’t lift the pins to shear line.

The 6300 series (standard commercial grade) uses SC1 or SARGENT 6-pin keyways with .109″ root depth and .015″ increment spacing. The 6400 series adds sidebar protection - you’ll feel a second track milled into the key blade. The 6500 series high-security cylinders use the RA/RB restricted keyways, which require factory authorization to purchase blanks; we source these through our Medeco and Sargent distributor relationships.

Identification: check the cylinder face for stamped series numbers, or the original key bow for “SARGENT” and a keyway code like “LA,” “LB,” or “RA.” If the key has a dimple pattern on the blade’s edge, you’ve got a 6500-series sidebar system. OEM Sargent blanks run 30-40% more than quality aftermarket equivalents from Ilco or JMA, but for restricted keyways there’s no aftermarket option - the factory keeps the key blank patent active. We’ve cut Sargent keys for Fort Worth commercial buildings near downtown since 2002, and the most common mismatch we see is an SC1 blank forced into an LA keyway; it works until it doesn’t, usually at 6 p.m. on a Friday.

Signs Your Sargent Car Key Cutting Is Failing

Signs Your Sargent Car Key Cutting Is Failing
  • The key catches at the 3 o’clock position in the ignition. This usually means the duplicate was cut on a worn duplicator wheel, leaving a ragged bitting peak that hangs on the cylinder’s top pins. Fort Worth’s dust and pollen season accelerates wear - grit embeds in soft brass and scores the pin chambers.
  • A new duplicate works the door but not the ignition, or vice versa. Different cylinders in the same vehicle often use different keyways or depths; the door may be on a Sargent SC1 while the ignition uses a sidebar-compatible blank. We measure both cylinders before cutting.
  • The key turns with visible resistance and gets worse in summer heat. Brass expands roughly .00001″ per degree Fahrenheit, and Fort Worth’s 100°F+ days can push a marginally cut key from “tight” to “stuck.” The original key still works because its bitting was cut to the tight side of tolerance; the duplicate wasn’t.
  • You’ve snapped a key in the cylinder. This almost always traces to a deep-cut valley (usually position 4 or 5 in a 6-pin system) that was undercut by a manual duplicator or a machine with loose jaw tension. Extraction runs $75-$125 on top of the replacement key.
  • The locksmith or hardware store said “we don’t have that blank.” Sargent’s restricted keyway program means most cutters stock zero RA/RB blanks. We keep LA, LB, LC, RA, and RB profiles on the truck, plus the Ilco equivalents for open keyways.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s how Sargent car key cutting prices break down in Fort Worth:

Service Price Range What’s Included
Standard brass duplicate (SC1/LA/LB keyways) $45-$65 Key blank, precision cut on calibrated duplicator, test in your cylinder
Transponder key cut + clone $95-$145 Key blank, bitting cut, transponder chip programmed to vehicle
High-security RA/RB restricted keyway $75-$110 Factory-authorized blank, cut to factory bitting card or decoded from cylinder
Mobile dispatch (Fort Worth city limits) $35-$55 Trip charge, waived if combined with other services
Broken key extraction + replacement $125-$195 Extraction, cylinder inspection, new key cut to code or decode

The range depends on keyway rarity, whether we cut to an existing bitting card or decode from the cylinder, and if transponder programming is required. Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. We quote the full figure before dispatch, with no call-out surcharge added at your door. Every key cut carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise - if it doesn’t turn smoothly, we recut or replace at no charge.

You can check three things safely: confirm the keyway code stamped on your key bow, verify the cylinder series number on the lock face, and test your spare key to isolate whether the problem is the key or the cylinder. What you cannot safely do is attempt to decode a 6-pin Sargent cylinder without a pinning kit and depth key set, or cut a restricted keyway blank without factory authorization - the blank simply won’t be available to you.

DIY key cutting at automated kiosks uses optical scanners that read wear, not original bitting. On a Sargent with .015″ increments, a worn peak reads shallow and the machine cuts shallow; your new key works for two weeks, then fails as the original peaks wear further. We’ve re-cut dozens of these for Fort Worth customers who spent $8 at a kiosk and $60 more to fix it. The name on the van is the warranty.
