Abloy Lock Rekeying: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

Abloy lock rekeying in Fort Worth typically runs $45-$95 per cylinder for standard Protec and Protec2 models, with same-day service available when you call before 2 PM. We stock Abloy-compatible pinning kits and key blanks on every truck, so most residential and commercial rekeys are completed in a single visit without ordering delays. Most Fort Worth owners discover their Abloy cylinder needs rekeying after a key breaks off, a tenant or employee turnover, or when the lock starts rejecting keys that worked fine last month.

Which Abloy Models This Applies To

Abloy’s product lines break into three tiers we service regularly in Fort Worth. The entry-grade Abloy Classic and Abloy Sento cylinders use a disc-detainer mechanism with 11 rotating discs; these are common in residential deadbolts installed between 2005 and 2015. The mid-tier Abloy Protec, introduced in 2001, steps up to a rotating disc system with a sidebar and a false-gate design that resists picking; you’ll find these on commercial entry doors and higher-end residential installations. The current flagship, Abloy Protec2, adds a secondary disc control feature and is the standard we see on new commercial builds in the Fort Worth CBD and medical district.

Identification is straightforward if you know where to look. The cylinder face is stamped with the series name - Classic, Sento, Protec, or Protec2 - usually at the 6 o’clock position. The key head also carries the series marking: Protec keys have a rounded shoulder with “ABLOY PROTEC” embossed; Protec2 keys add a small “2” suffix. The critical compatibility gotcha: Protec and Protec2 cylinders cannot be keyed alike. The keyways are physically different, and the pinning systems are incompatible. We have found this surprises owners who assumed “Abloy is Abloy” and tried to match a 2019 Protec2 deadbolt with an older Protec cylinder.

For rekeying, we use factory-authorized pinning kits matched to the specific series. Aftermarket pinning discs exist for Classic and Sento lines, but we do not use them. The tolerances on disc-detainer locks are tighter than pin-tumbler systems; a disc that is three-thousandths out of spec will cause intermittent key rejection that gets worse in Fort Worth’s summer heat. OEM Abloy discs are hardened steel with a consistent 1.5 mm thickness; the aftermarket equivalents we have measured vary from 1.45 mm to 1.55 mm, which is enough to create binding in the cylinder.

Signs Your Abloy Lock Rekeying Is Failing

Signs Your Abloy Lock Rekeying Is Failing
  • Key insertion requires jiggling or multiple attempts. In a disc-detainer cylinder, this usually means one or more discs has developed a burr or the lubricant has hardened. Fort Worth’s dust and occasional humidity accelerates this; we see it most often on exterior doors facing west, where afternoon heat bakes the cylinder interior.
  • The key turns but the bolt does not retract fully. This points to wear in the cam tailpiece connection, not the cylinder itself. The rekey may still be necessary if the key is worn, but the mechanical failure is downstream. We check this before quoting to avoid charging for a rekey when the real problem is a loose cam screw.
  • A key broke off inside the cylinder. Abloy keys are nickel silver and harder than standard brass keys, but they still snap when forced against a stuck disc. Extracting a broken key from a disc-detainer cylinder requires specialized picks; amateur attempts with needle-nose pliers typically push the fragment deeper and score the disc faces.
  • New keys work inconsistently while old keys still function. This is the hallmark of a cylinder with mixed disc wear. The old key has worn to match the irregularities; the new key, cut to factory spec, catches on high spots. Rekeying with fresh discs solves it; cutting another new key to “match the worn cylinder” is a shortcut that fails within months.
  • The lock was rekeyed recently and now malfunctions again. We see this after DIY rekeying attempts or work by technicians without Abloy-specific training. The disc springs in Protec and Protec2 cylinders are clockwound and must be seated with a compression tool; hand-assembly leaves springs at uneven tension, causing discs to hang up at random intervals.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Standard Abloy cylinder rekey (Classic/Sento) $45-$65 Disassembly, disc replacement, new keys (2), function test
High-security Abloy rekey (Protec/Protec2) $65-$95 Disassembly, OEM disc set, new keys (2), sidebar inspection, function test
Broken key extraction + rekey $85-$125 Extraction, cylinder inspection, rekey if salvageable, replacement recommendation if damaged
Additional keys $12-$18 each Factory-cut duplicate, registered to your key code for Protec2

What drives the range: Protec2 discs cost more than Classic discs, and Protec2 rekeying requires registration of the new key code with Abloy’s factory database. The labor is comparable; the parts and administrative steps are not. Every rekey includes a written scope before we start and a documented photo record of the completed work. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies; Haven Standard Clause 1 governs the price you are quoted - the dispatcher’s number is the invoice total, with no call-out surcharge added on arrival.

An owner can safely check three things: confirm the series marking on the cylinder face, verify the key number stamped on the key bow (if present), and test whether the failure is consistent or intermittent. What you cannot safely do is disassemble a disc-detainer cylinder without the proper pinning tray and compression tools. The disc springs are under tension; releasing them without a holder sends small parts across the room and voids the cylinder’s warranty. More critically, reassembling with contaminated or incorrect discs creates a lock that works in your hand and fails on your door.

We carry Abloy pinning kits for all four series on every truck in Fort Worth. Most residential rekeys are done in 30-45 minutes on site. If the cylinder is damaged beyond rekeying, we stock replacement cylinders and can install same-day. Call (817) 765-4998; the dispatcher will confirm your series, quote a firm price, and schedule a technician. The name on the van is the warranty.
