Medeco Car Key Cutting: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

Medeco car key cutting in Fort Worth typically runs $145-$285 per key, including programming for transponder-equipped models, and we stock the most common Medeco automotive blanks on our trucks for same-day service. Most owners discover the problem when their key starts catching in the ignition cylinder, or when a worn duplicate no longer turns the door lock - the original Medeco biaxial cut angles have degraded through daily use in Texas heat and dust.

We cut Medeco automotive keys by code or by duplication at our shop and on mobile calls across Fort Worth, from the Near Southside to Keller and Saginaw. Daniel Novak and our crew have handled Medeco high-security automotive systems since before the brand’s ASSA ABLOY acquisition, and we maintain factory-authorized key cutting equipment for the full Medeco product line.

Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco automotive keys fall into three distinct generations, and mixing them up wastes a trip. The original Medeco Biaxial keys, common on commercial fleet vehicles and some private imports through the early 2000s, use angled cuts on two axes and require a dedicated key machine - standard duplicators will not reproduce the sidebar engagement geometry. The Medeco KeyMark line, introduced for lighter commercial use, uses a simpler single-axis cut but still demands a Medeco-authorized blank; a standard Ilco or Jet blank will enter the lock but will not lift the sidebar to the shear line. Current Medeco M3 automotive applications add a sliding pin element that requires both the correct blank and a cutting machine calibrated to 0.001-inch tolerances.

Identification is straightforward if you know where to look. Biaxial keys have “MEDECO” stamped on the bow with a small triangle logo; KeyMark bows carry the key-shaped KeyMark symbol; M3 keys show “M3” and a three-level pin icon. The keyway profile also differs - Biaxial uses a restricted keyway with a sidebar groove on the left, M3 centers the sidebar groove. We stock OEM Medeco blanks and select Ilco aftermarket equivalents where the application permits; for M3 systems, we use only OEM blanks because the sliding pin tolerances do not forgive even slight variances in blank alloy hardness.

One Fort Worth-specific compatibility gotcha: fleet vehicles originally keyed to Medeco Biaxial and later rekeyed to M3 sometimes retain the original door locks while receiving M3 ignition cylinders. The result is two different key blanks for one vehicle, and owners often discover this only when they ask for a single “master” key. We check both keyways before cutting.

Signs Your Medeco Car Key Cutting Is Failing

Signs Your Medeco Car Key Cutting Is Failing
  • The key requires jiggling to turn the ignition. The angled cuts on a Biaxial or M3 key have worn from repeated insertion against Texas dust and grit, altering the precise geometry that aligns the sidebar pins. What feels like a lock problem is often a key problem, and a fresh cut from the factory code restores smooth operation without touching the cylinder.
  • The door lock accepts the key but the ignition does not, or vice versa. This usually means one cylinder has been replaced with a different Medeco generation while the other was not. The key blank that works in the door lacks the cut angles or sidebar engagement for the ignition, a common scenario in fleet vehicles with mixed maintenance histories around Fort Worth’s industrial parks off I-30 and I-20.
  • A duplicate key works worse than the original. Standard key duplicators trace the worn edge of an existing key, compounding wear into the copy. Medeco’s biaxial angles are particularly vulnerable to this error; after two generations of duplication, the key may not engage the sidebar at all. Cutting from the factory code eliminates accumulated wear.
  • The key bow is cracked or the blade is bent near the shoulder. Medeco blanks use a harder brass alloy than standard keys, which resists wear but can develop stress fractures if used as a pry tool or carried on a heavy ring. A cracked bow will eventually separate from the blade, typically at the worst moment. We replace the blank and transfer any transponder chip to the new key.
  • Remote head functions work but the key will not start the vehicle. The transponder coil embedded in the key head has separated from the blade, or the glass vial transponder has failed. For Medeco applications with integrated transponder heads, we can extract the chip and install it in a new cut key, or program a replacement chip if the original is damaged.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range What’s Included
Medeco standard key cut by code $145-$195 OEM or qualified aftermarket blank, precision cut, function test
Medeco transponder key cut + programming $195-$285 Cut, chip programming, immobilizer sync, 2-key minimum for some vehicles
Medeco M3 key with sliding pin $225-$285 OEM blank only, calibrated cut, sidebar engagement verification
Emergency/mobile service adder $35-$55 After-hours or on-site dispatch within Fort Worth city limits

The price range reflects blank type, transponder generation, and whether we are cutting from an existing key or originating from a lost-key situation. Haven Standard Clause 1 applies: the price our dispatcher quotes on the phone is the price on the invoice, and our technician is not permitted to alter it at your door. This rule has been in place since 2002. Every Medeco key we cut carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise - if the key does not operate smoothly in all specified locks, we recut or replace at no charge.

We stock Medeco Biaxial, KeyMark, and M3 blanks on our Fort Worth service trucks, along with Schlage and Kwikset residential cylinders for customers who need both automotive and home service on the same call. The name on the van is the warranty.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no safety hazard in carrying a worn Medeco key - it will not damage your lock immediately, and you will not be injured attempting to use it. The risk is operational: a key that fails in a parking garage late at night, or a transponder that desynchronizes and immobilizes your vehicle.

What you can check yourself: verify whether the problem is the key or the lock by testing the key in all cylinders (doors, ignition, trunk). If function varies by cylinder, the issue is likely rekeying inconsistency, not key wear. What goes wrong with DIY: Medeco blanks are restricted to authorized dealers, so the “blank” sold online may be a standard keyway that will not engage the sidebar. Even with the correct blank, a standard duplicator cannot cut the biaxial angles; an incorrect cut will jam in the lock and damage the sidebar pins, turning a $195 key replacement into a $400+ cylinder rebuild.

We are not affiliated with Medeco or ASSA ABLOY; we are an independent Fort Worth locksmith with factory-authorized equipment. If your key is failing, call (817) 765-4998 and we will quote the exact price before dispatch.
