Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Is Failing

• Key works in one direction (locking) but not the other (unlocking). This is a classic tailpiece fracture in Biaxial deadbolts. The tailpiece transmits torque from the cylinder to the bolt; when it cracks, the unlocking rotation fails while the less-stressed locking rotation still functions.
• Cylinder rotates freely without moving the bolt. The cylinder retaining clip has broken or the tailpiece has separated entirely. The lock is now decorative. This is the point where we receive the call at 11 PM.

What you can safely check: verify the key is not bent, spray a dry Teflon lubricant into the keyway (never graphite on a Medeco; it fouls the sidebar), and confirm the strike plate screws are tight. If the bolt still binds, the problem is internal.

Where DIY goes wrong: Medeco deadbolts use a sidebar mechanism under spring pressure. Disassembling the cylinder without a pinning kit and follow-block will scatter springs and sidebar components across your floor.
