The M3 series adds a slider mechanism for pick resistance and uses a different sidebar geometry. The X4 series, the current production line, combines the slider with a hardened steel insert and a longer sidebar spring that does not retrofit into Biaxial housings.

To identify your series, remove the cylinder and check the face stamp. Biaxial cylinders show “MEDECO” only. M3 cylinders add a small “M3” mark near the keyway. X4 cylinders show “X4” and have a slightly wider face diameter, 1.180 inches versus 1.125 inches on the older lines. The key blank also tells you: Biaxial uses the 60-series blank, M3 uses the 00-series, and X4 uses the 04-series. DIY or Call Us?

There is no safe DIY path for Medeco master key work. The sidebar spring is under compression and can launch if the cylinder plug is removed without a follower tool. The rotating pins are directional and must seat at precise angles; a pin installed backward will appear to work until it jams at a critical moment. More importantly, a mistake in master pinning compromises every lock in the hierarchy, and without the factory bitting list, you cannot reverse what was done.
