Medeco does not manufacture a proprietary smart lock under its own brand. A genuine Medeco will show “M3,” “Biaxial,” or “Logic” stamped near the keyway, with angled pin chambers visible at 20 degrees off vertical. Measure the cylinder tailpiece: residential retrofits typically need a 1-1/8″ or 1-3/8″ tailpiece to engage the smart lock’s cam driver. The wrong length strips the cam or leaves the bolt half-thrown.

Signs Your Medeco Smart Lock Installation Is Failing

• Keypad or app responds, but the bolt does not throw. The smart lock’s motor clutch is slipping, often because a Medeco cylinder with excessive sidebar spring tension is fighting the motor. We measure sidebar force with a tension gauge; spec is 12-18 oz. A cylinder pinned too tightly from the factory, or re-pinned incorrectly by a previous locksmith, will burn out the motor in 6-18 months.
• Grinding noise during lock or unlock cycles. The tailpiece is misaligned with the cam driver, or the Medeco cylinder was installed without the correct adapter ring. Aluminum tailpieces deform under the torque of a high-security cylinder’s sidebar mechanism. We replace with hardened steel spec.

What you can safely check: battery voltage with a multimeter (3.6V minimum for most smart locks), whether the key operates the cylinder smoothly offline, and whether the strike plate is aligned so the bolt throws without contact. These three checks eliminate 40% of apparent “failures.”

Where DIY goes wrong: drilling new holes without knowing your door’s fire rating; stripping the cam driver by forcing a misaligned tailpiece; and losing sidebar springs during cylinder disassembly, which turns a $200 job into a $500 replacement.
